So, you may or may not know that the Playstation Network (PSN) has been down for close to two weeks now. Reports that over 2.2 million active credit cards have been hijacked and are possibly being used as ransom. Now this sucks and all, and if you’re smart you have already cancelled your debit and credit cards and have gotten them re-issued. Life will move forward and you’re out 5 days without a card and have to change any saved account info. Usually it’s no sweat, just a little time out of your day.
The big question right now is, “Does Sony owe us anything for the time that the PSN was down?” Well honestly, I don’t personally believe Sony as a company owes free users a thing, HOWEVER, it is definitely in their best interest to offer at least something. Well as of today in a press release in Tokyo, Sony has announced that its PSN network will be back up and running again in the next few days. At this point my prediction is true. They are offering all users one month of PSN+ and all existing users and extra month of PSN+. It also goes on to say it will throw in addition entertainment content. They obviously leave it open to suggestion as to what it could be. Probably a free movie rental or something along those lines.
In the end I honestly feel bad for Sony. I am a big Playstation fan and it absolutely sucks to have something like this happen to you. It’s like having home security for your house and the alarm system was bypassed by experts. I’ve had my place and my car broken into before and it’s a very violating feeling.
So what are your thoughts on this whole thing? I’ve seen some very different opinions over the course of the last week. Some angry, some sympathetic. Do you think Sony owes you anything for their system being down? Is the package they’re offering decent enough for subscribers and non-subscribers? Express your thoughts!

I bet a lot of people are wishing they used prepaid PSN cards now. I do all my purchases on XBL that way, usually bought with cash at the local store. There’s no information whatsoever to be lost or hacked that way.
Does SONY owe anybody anything maybe they do maybe they don’t. SONY doesn’t owe anybody in the general network anything over the outage. It’s like with your internet and TV, power companies. Their crap breaks, and leaves you in the cold, but they don’t owe you anything. However if it is determined that your personal information was stolen, yes they do owe you. But the big question is… what do they owe you? Free content is fine and dandy, but they need to be offering those affected free credit and identity theft monitoring by a third party of their choice (you shouldn’t trust SONY to do this) for a set number of years, such as 3.
