PSP2 to be Revealed Jan. 27th

The PSP2 is on the verge of being revealed on Thursday’s Sony Press Conference. The PSP2 has been a highly rumored device for quite sometime now. Many different prototypes have hit the interent as to what they will look like and how they will function. The photo I used here is rumored to be a leaked photo of the actual device. Kotaku still states that you can’t believe everything you see and that the photo could still possibly be rubbish.

Of the things rumored to be apart of the features for the PSP2 is the nearly full width HD OLED Touchscreen. I have also heard that it will be protected by an ultra durable material to help keep breaking to a minimum. One of the high points that people really seemed to enjoy is the slider feature of the PSP GO that helps cover the buttons and make the device easily portable. The other big change is the introduction of 3G Cellular support for data. This feature opens up all sorts of possibilities. Portable internet and downloadable games and apps on the go, much like it’s iPhone competitor. Another big improvement that people have asked for is the dual analog sticks, and based on the picture here, seems like they’ve delivered. I’m going to also go on an extra limb here and say that it will have camera and possible video support. But that’s just a guess.

Obviously because the overall mystery of the PSP2 is still in waiting, the current opening game line-up is still in the dark as well. In my best guess, I believe it will be many of the usual suspects. Silent Hill, Street Fighter 4, Crash Bandicoot, Sonic the Hedgehog and maybe even some more large scale games such as Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. I’m going to even go on another limb here and guess that they will even create a new category for the “Minis” series of games that will be HD oriented and online based.

The big question here though is, what does the PSP2 need to do in order to succeed in the market that it is facing. Video games seem to be a tried and true market for some sort of stability. The only people that seem to suffer are the local businesses who strive to stay alive in a market beginning to dominated by downloads and digital services, but I digress. The Nintendo 3DS is showing a lot of promise and has a HUGE lineup of games. People say it may be priced to high at it’s $249.99 price point. But if history repeats itself, Sony will try to capitalize on higher end technology that will last, instead of relying on what may be considered a gimick. (i.e. 3D and Motion Gaming) You also have to look at the PS3 though as well, because what did they do?…3D and Motion Gaming, and relatively succeeded at it.

I honestly believe that Sony will have a higher price on their system as they usually do. Probably somewhere around the $300 to $350 range. I believe this has the ability to compete with Nintendo, SO LONG as they make it worth the money. Tell me what services it will offer and what line up it will open with. I want to be impressed with everything that Sony has to offer. I was a fan of the PSP and I really want to see the PSP2 succeed. So until January 27th, 2011, everything is rumor. Bring it on Sony! Show me whatcha got!!!
